Wheat Cultivation - Discovers new horizons....!
Baigapara natural village of Udumkela Revenue village is situated 80 km away from Ambikapur in Mainpat block. 165 families reside in this village. This tribal village has mostly Manjhi and Oraon tribes. 60% of the village land is barren, 20% land is good paddy crop and rest of 20% land average land where single crop can be cultivated. Due to unavailability of water for all the 12 month, villagers were fully dependant on rain water for cultivation. Residents of this village often went to mines near Mainpat for employment as labours and some of them were dependant on minor forest produce. Due to less earning, their interest in agriculture was going down on the other hand the influential persons of the village were trying to grab their land.
Chhattisgarh Tribal Development Programme was started in this village in April 2007. In the entry point activity works, the villagers decided to take works for their livelihood enhancement and food security. They wanted water for the village so that they can take one crop of wheat, which they used to cultivate previously. As the site was suitable for it. Even today paddy cultivation is being taken in some of adjoining villages of Udumkela and villagers of Baigapara used to work there as laborers.
Adjoining to Baigapara natural village there is Khutbar forests. This forest has an perennial source of water, which flows round the year. During interaction meeting with the villagers by Chhattisgarh Tribal Development Programme officials and working FNGOs a proposal for construction of a canal on the said water source was discussed. Consequently villagers decided to construct 4 Kilometer long canal under entry point activity. The irrigation canal was constructed in Rs. 28000/-. This amount was paid as wages to the laborers and rest work was completed by labor contribution (Shramdan).
The work was completed in August-September 2007. After having irrigation facility in their village through the canal 49 villagers of Baigapara have started cultivation of wheat in 76 acre of land. Many villager borrowed money for purchase seed and cultivated wheat. Their labor is reflecting in the form of standing crop of wheat. Villagers are expecting at least 10 to 13 quintal production per acre of wheat. Approximately 800-900 quintal of wheat will be produced, which will cost around Rs.100000/- (Rs. one lakh). As 49 families have cultivated wheat, average earning per family will be Rs. 2000/-. Now the will be able to cultivate round the year with this water. This intervention has created a permanent community asset as well as provided food security for through out the year. Now the villagers have stopped going out for employment to mines and now they are understanding importance of their land. Some tribal villagers of nearby village Majhapara also trying to take back their land which is mortgaged.
